Book Review for "Tai Chi for beginners and the 24 Forms" by Dr Paul Lam and Nancy Kay
Written by Cynthia Fels, M.Ed.
Learning Specialist/Educational Consultant
Senior Trainer and Tai Chi for Health Instructor

Dr. Paul Lam, highly respected tai chi master and world-renowned tai chi teacher, and one of his students, master trainer, Nancy Kay, have created a master of a how to tai chi book!

"Tai Chi for Beginners and the 24 Forms" has beautifully colored illustrations of Dr. Lam, his students and instructors, playing tai chi in beautiful locations around the world, including the Big Sur Coast of Central California. Dr. Lam is also the model for the book"s many teaching illustrations: the 24 Forms, Warm Up Exercises, Cool Down Exercises, QiGong Exercises, the Foundation Movements and the Tai Chi Beginner"s Set. All moves are clearly illustrated and accompanied by simple and easy to follow, written directions as well.

The book also acts as a great reference and resource guide for the beginner, as well as for teachers and advanced practioners. Basic tai chi terms, historical tai chi information, the different tai chi styles, different tai chi forms, practice tips, health aspects of tai chi and studies on the health benefits of tai chi, as well as essential tai chi principles are among some of the topics so clearly defined and shared.
As if this wasn"t enough to make a good read, the book"s structure is designed, as Lam and Kay state, to:

"Help the reader build a solid foundation right from the start, as well as giving him or her a taste of higher level tai chi. And perhaps more important, we"ve done our best to make tai chi fun to learn."

The book builds lessons in a step-by-step progressive fashion, and just like building a good solid house, each layer or lesson is built solidly upon the previous lesson. Beginners first learn how to lay a good foundation for their tai chi through learning the "Six Easy Steps." Learners can then progress to learning "the Tai Chi for Beginner"s Set" which is built on the previous moves and knowledge. From there the learner, if they chose, may learn more in depth tai chi skills. And finally, when they are ready, the 24 Forms. Again, all lessons and each step of the process are written in easy to follow, simple directions and accompanied with clear illustrations.

This book would be a great complement when used by a learner in conjunction with classes, and/or the instructional DVD "Tai Chi for Beginners and the 24 Forms." However a person living in isolation and with no instructor available could easily learn from this book as well.
Whether writing about essential tai chi principles, the historical aspects of tai chi, or sharing their "Six Easy Steps" of learning tai chi, Dr. Paul Lam and Nancy Kay bring this ancient practice into our daily lives. This is a tai chi how to book that really shines!

  1. A brilliant starting point! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Nov 2021

Dr Paul Lam and Nancy Kaye have created a near-perfect reference for people wanting to begin their tai chi journey, and also for those who have begun making their way along the student path.
The book covers the foundation movements, the "Tai Chi Beginners" set and, of course, the 24 forms. Each section is supported by sumptuous photographs and clear instructions, making it a useful stand-alone resource that becomes even more beneficial when used in conjunction with other teaching references such as DVDs and classes.
The book also looks at other foundational elements including warming up, qigong, pushing hands and the history of tai chi.
All up, this is an almost essential foundational tai chi reference.

  2. An awesome guide to increase my depth of Tai Chi understanding 5 Star Review

I have been practicing and teaching Tai Chi for 3 years now. Tai Chi for beginners and the 24 Forms is an informative book that is helping increase my depth of understanding Tai Chi. It is also a useful aid to improve my Tai Chi lesson content.
Thank you Paul for another awesome book to add to my collection

  3. Very good book, especially with the DVD 5 Star Review

Posted by on 26th Jul 2017

I purchased both the book and the DVD and find the pair to be excellent. You can take or leave the theoretical side about qi and all that (I leave it), but the explanations are very helpful.

I like the way it goes slowly and step by step. And Dr Lam's way of speaking is excellent, neither bossy nor lacking in detail. The idea of presenting the forms and movements by two people aimed two different ways is particularly helpful. I personally have trouble imitating someone who is facing me, as I tend to put out my right foot when he is putting out his left.

So I am very happy with this purchase. Now I must stop talking and get back to my forms!

  4. An excellent Teaching Tool 5 Star Review

The book is very well written and inspires confidence in the reader to begin the practice of Tai Chi. The instructins are clear and a real confidence builder. I am still in the process of reading the book and am planning to start practice at the begin ning of September.

You may be interested to know that I am a retirde Principal of an Adult Education Department in a Technical College i the UK> If only such a book had been available in the 1980s. I retired in 1989.

All good wishes and I shall be returning for the videos and other appropriate literature.

  5. Excellent video 5 Star Review

Posted by on 8th Apr 2015

I have another video on the 24 forms that I bought from the school I am currently studying tai chi at. Dr Lam's video and book is so much better. I found the instructor in the other video keen to show how far she could stretch whereas Dr Lam paces the steps for a beginner and I am making progress that I wasn't making in the actual class. Dr Lam explains the steps carefully making it easier for a beginner to follow. Practising the video daily and going through the book is already improving my tai chi. It makes me think about the forms and how one progresses into the next. Highly recommended

  6. excellent 5 Star Review

There's no shortage of photos to show you how to do the moves though explanations are not always clear but with the help of the internet you will get your answers.the book is not perfect because nothing can replace a real teacher but I have the dvd as well and between both it comes as close as you can get to having your own private teacher.
