What's QI?

Sorry Fourquet, your caps looked more like abbr. A common question, the qi sensations. For beginner i would suggest what is in the Tai Chi classics: work on your correct posture and movements, focus and relax, then your powers will grow.....in other words: enjoy your practice.

First exercise is to focus and cleanse the mind from all irritating thoughts. Imagine you are in a tranquil forest and have"no mind"
Another strategy i learnt from my teacher: to focus thoughts on the function and purpose of the movement i.e. martial purpose or power development

One practical tip: when you do a move e.g. brush knee aim your palm strike at a physical point you painted on the wall. Or when doing"parting the wild horses manes, when you separate your hands at the end of the move imagine a force in your hands going opposite direction and split or unbalanced the opponent.

First exercise to focus and relax is a zhan zhuang position: stand with legs slightly bent, hips flexed, back straight, hands roughly in front of the abdomen. Close your eyes and relax and cleanse your mind, think of being in a tranquil forest and discard any irritating thought(1000 monkeys). I can't explain this correctly on the net, you need to work with the teacher. do you have Paul's tape:Tai chi for beginners? He shows easier qi gong exercises to cleanse the mind, among others open/close hands

TCA(Tai chi for arthritis) are 12 forms of Sun style, followed by the advanced 9 moevements and symetrical 12 movements in reverse. This is easy to learn for beginners, linear without angles. Myself and many, many other advanced practioners have learnt TCA first before advancing to Sun 73, myself later to traditional Sun by Mme Sun Jian Yun.

My karate kids liked TCA because the pace was livelier than Yang. The repetitions of open/close hands makes Sun style one big qi gong exercise. When open/close hands it is easy to do, you will practice deep breathing and your qi flowing very quickly
