Northen Wu style is a variation of what may be called traditional Wu style of Jianquan. The Northern (Beijing) variation is supposedly Quan Yu's 'original' form while the on eseen today is that of his son, whose main exponent was Ma yueh and his wife.

It was called Beijing Wu style becuase as a main capital, it took the name. The subtlelty can be felt only in practice as its 'health' benefits (style itself) mirrors principles asociated with Zhang Guangde and his Taijizhang methods.

The outward differences (form expression) are not that different (from Jianquan's form) but the requirements in its changes makes it worthwhile.

I am told it is similar to Traditional Yang Style, but this is only secondhand information. Sorry I can't be of more help.

NOTE:

Quan Yu variation has more twisting movements with bent and stretching range of movement that is more pronounced than that of his son's (Jianquan) form expression.

When Quan Yu learnt taijiquan, he retained more chanssjin in movement quality while his son's trek to Shanghai tended to be 'easier' (subjective quality, of course). Both style have their excellent exponents.

Wang Peisheng, a main Northern Wu style exponent died earlier this year.
