Suggested Lesson Plan for Tai Chi for Arthritis

Suggested Lesson Plan for Tai Chi for Arthritis

Important Note: Follow this plan in conjunction with:
  • The two-disk Instructional DVD “Tai Chi for Arthritis – 12 lessons”
  • Consider the objectives and conditions of your participants
  • The book “Teaching Tai Chi Effectively” by Dr Lam as a resource for your teaching

Consider these measures:
  • Contact participants prior to the first session to let them know what to wear, what to expect and offer any relevant information or assistance.
  • Roll call during each session.
  • Contact any participants who missed a session without prior notice to find out the reason and offer any assistance if necessary.
  • Record any misadventures and reasons for absence.

General Guidelines

1. Encourage participants to practice regularly, ideally 30 to 40 minutes a day and most days of the week. It can be done in separate sessions.

2. Communicate with participants; find out their needs and offer any assistance.

3. Give meaningful and positive feedback to participants. Avoid over correcting, it can overwhelm participants. It is preferable to go through each point with the entire group without singling out any one person for correction. Never work on more than one point of improvement at a time.

4. Keep talking to a minimum. Do more “follow me and practice together”. Practice as much as possible without over-tiring participants.

NB:
Use your judgement to modify this as appropriate. You are welcome to contact Dr Lam through

LESSON ONE
  • Greeting
  • Ask each participant to introduce themselves
  • Encourage participants to work within their own comfort zone, be gentle, do not over extend and advise them they should let you know if they have any problems

Material to teach:
  • Two minute talk on “What is Tai Chi?”
  • Learn Warm Up exercises
  • Understand how to use minimal force for the movements
  • Learn Cooling Down exercises
  • Form 1 — Commencement Form

Emphasise on Body Alignment: -
(a) Maintain, as much as possible, an upright but relaxed posture at all times
(b) Take care when doing ‘bend-knee’ stance that it is desirable but participants must work very gradually towards that. Start working with knees slightly bent.

LESSON TWO
  • Greeting
  • Warm-up

Material to teach:
  • Revise Lesson One
  • Form 2
  • Cooling down

Work on the Dan Tian breathing method.
Stage I – practice Form 2 with the intention of magnetic force to be coordinated with breathing.

LESSON THREE
The following should be done at each lesson:-
  • Greeting
  • Warm-up
  • Revision
  • Cooling down

New material
  • Form 3
  • Closing Form

Practice from Form 1 to 3 and then Closing Form.
Discuss making the movements gentle and flowing.

LESSON FOUR
Form 4 – part one
The point to discuss is ‘Transfer’ of Weight.

LESSON FIVE
Form 4 – part two

Point to be discussed is ‘the Balance’. It is important to have mental balance and ‘Tai Chi’ will help you with this.  Also the ‘body balance’, this is the balance when you move. This is better exemplified in Form 3 ‘Waving Hands’, where you need to maintain good balance.

LESSON SIX
Form 5 and Form 6.
Discuss ‘mental focus’ to be coordinated with breathing.  This will help people to focus better, to improve mental relaxation and will help to alleviate the fear of falling.

Dan tian breathing stage II – abdominal breathing

LESSON EIGHT
Learn the reverse 6 – Form 7
Improve the quality of ‘Form’; the flow of ‘Form’ should be slow, smooth and continuous. This will help improve muscle strength.

LESSON NINE
Revision to improve
Learn the reverse 6 – Form 8

In the ‘Knee-bend’ position, if your student has stronger muscles you can explain about lower centred gravity. Try to bend the knees a little bit lower but within normal comfort zone and while still maintaining a lower body stance.

LESSON TEN
Revision to improve
Learn the reverse 6 – Form 9 and Form10
Revise both sides of Basic Six

Encourage participants on their achievement so far.
Let them know how well the have done and what they have achieved.
